Steps to Getting Your First License

Step 1: Pre-Apply online for a Permit number and save time in the office.

Step 2: Obtain an Instruction Permit.

Requirements to get Permit:

Age 15 to 15 ½ years of age:

  • Certificate of enrollment from the driver training school or instructor. Register for ABC Driving School’s Teen Driving Course.
  • Parent’s signature granting permission for the instruction permit.

Age 15 ½ to 17 years of age:

  • Pass the driver’s knowledge test. Schedule an appointment to take a test.
  • Parent’s signature granting permission for the instruction permit.

Age 18 years of age or older:

Step 3: Pass a Teen Driving Course

Register for a Teen Driving Course with ABC Driving School.
Requirements:

  • A total of 30 hours of classroom instruction, with a maximum of 2 hours/day.
  • A minimum of 6 hours of practice driving, with a maximum of 1 hour/day.
  • A minimum of 1 hour of behind-the-wheel observation

Step 4: Driving Practice

Requirements:

  • Obtain an Instruction Permit before practicing Behind the Wheel.
  • 50 hours of total out-of-class practice time
  • 10 hours of nighttime driving

*Diver must be accompanied by a 5-year licensed driver. (Their license must be valid but doesn’t have to be a Washington State driver license.)

Step 5: Pass a Certified Washington State Knowledge Test, which can be done at ABC Driving School and Testing Center. Schedule an appointment.

Step 6: Have an Instruction Permit for a minimum of 6 months or be over 18.

Step 7: Pass a Certified Washington State Skills Test (Behind the Wheel), which can be done at ABC Driving School and DOL Testing Center. Schedule an appointment.

Step 8: Get Your Picture Taken!

At the Shoreline DOL office (15809 Westminster Way N), you can complete the final steps:

  • Pass a vision test
  • Decide if you would like to register as an organ donor
  • Get your picture taken
  • Be sure to bring a parent, proof of ID and a Social Security Number.

You are now ready to get on the road.
